Re: ID of two Hurricanes down in France in 1940

Dear Bernard

You quote L1673 as the aircraft in which Billy Drake was shot down.
ALL my secondary sources say this belonged to No 73 Sq and was the aircraft that R A Marchand crash landed that day.
Checking JJ Halley and AB monograph the L register, the record card of said individual WAS transferred at some point FROM No 1 Sq TO No 73 Sq.

Can you please check your AIR sources and quote VERBATIM what they say about L1673?

Cheers
Stig

PS: Larry. Nice to have someone starting up such interesting topics!!!
Luckily our wifes doesn't know, or they would probably think we are crazy, which of course they already know....

Re: ID of two Hurricanes down in France in 1940

Hi,

Marchand was wounded a/c L1673 crash landed 73 Sqn.
As earlier Drake's was a/c "P" he baled wounded 1 Sqn.
The other 1 Sqn a/c was L1681 Lorimer damaged and force landed.

Question :Wasn't 67Wing AASF part of the BEF ?

Thanks Alex

That is exactly my details as well. I suppose since Bernard does not answer he is in agreement with this and his earlier report was a misquote

Cheers

Re: ID of two Hurricanes down in France in 1940

Hello Stig and Alex,

I am sorry, you are right. I can read from Don Minterne " 73 squadron " that L1673 was allocated to N° 1 squadron in october 1938 and to N° 73 squadron on the fourth of March 1940 to be shot down on the 13th of may 1940 ( P/O R.A Marchand force landed wonded ).
I have now to find out this N° 1 sqn serial number. I' ll keep you informed.

Many thanks.

Best regards.

Bernard.

Re: ID of two Hurricanes down in France in 1940

Good afternoon Alex,

The serial number I am now looking for is the one of the Hurricane that
Billy Drake was flying.

Cheers.

Bernard.
