Re: Photo Fokker D.VII

Hi Clint. the clear shot of 6666/18 is on p.11 of Ray's D.VII Datafile no.9.

There were 2 D.VIIs in Js12 with slightly different broom insignia and white nose areas different, but both probably Bessen's ?

The star D.VII in your photo seems to be in British hands but not the one Auer was shot down in, which had Js40 colours plus narrow tail stripes and was photographed with Soden who shot him down. At least that's how I see it; can't help with serials I'm afraid. I wonder if the one with a star on white band was Auer's ?
There are a couple more photos of it anyway ( don't help though!).

Nick

Re: Photo Fokker D.VII

Hi Nick,

Thanks. My fault I didn't read your post properly. I thought you said that 6666/18 was the Besen machine. Reading it again you clearly didn't. Also it shows that I must have owned the Fokker Anthology before WDF 9, which as you say has a clear photo.Alas, the records I have in my excel doc are based on the first photo I see of an aircraft. Still all clear now hopefully.

The Fokker Anthology has photos of Auer's machine with the blue (?) striped tail. I had thought both of the Davidstern machines were flown by Auer. Now I'm less certain. I believe all the photos in the links I provided are captured machines,so unless he had more than one machine at the same time, not impossible I suppose, it suggests that the one in link on this site is not Auer's machine(?) Also one machine appears to have been captured by the RAF's 41 Squadron and the other by a USA unit

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Fokker D.VII

Hi Clint. Thought you might like this little film (if you havn't).... a real variety of DVIIs; I recognised one or two. If only it was in COLOUR !!

At 02.20 mins. there's another one with a 6-point star.

All for now

Re: Photo Fokker D.VII

Hello Nick,

Thanks very much for posting this interesting link. I've looked through it once and its really great to watch 'live' Fokker D.VIIs.I shall be watching it again while pausing to see if I can pickout any serial numbers, though that looks like a challenge...

Still, I was listening to Leeds at Swansea while watching the video and Pablo Hernandez and yourself have both added,in your different ways, to the quality of my Sunday afternoon.

Regards,

Clint

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of Fokker D.VII F D.7788/18in American hands at Koblenz airfield following the war:

Does anyone know which unit operated this machine prior to the armistice?

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Fokker D.VII

Clint. Another shot of 7788 apparently with the 85th Aero (DH-4s) though there is an SE5a in the hangar, maybe 25th. No markings on the DVII unfortunately.

Re: Photo Fokker D.VII

Hello Nick,

Thanks for the response. Its quite remarkable that such a high percentage of Fokker D.VII photos seem to date from the immediate post war period.I guess that may also be the case with 91*/18 and 'Z' in post #19 of this thread too. Annoyingly I feel sure I've seen a photo of 91*/18 somewhere before but can't think where. Well if that's a duplicate at least the machine with the 'Pelikan' in post #18 appears new and predates the war's end.

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Fokker D.VII

Hi Clint. You may have seen the same photo in the Thetford & Gray "German aircraft of the First World War". The diagonal tail stripes on "Z" are similar to Jasta 37.
I think 7788/18 may be at Colombey-les-Belles both the 85th and 25th were there for a few weeks in 1919 (hence the SE5a? ). The field was HQ for Supply Services and demobilized USAS units post-war.
On p.9 of this site is 7744/18 with the 25th Aero possibly at the same time. This is a modelling site but has some good detail shots of DVIIs. 7788/18 is on p.10.
