Re: Mitchell Shot down on May 31st,1944, Italy: Info needed

The page appears to be a single page from a multi-page MIS-X (Escape/Evader) interview. Apparently, only this page was eventually added to the MACR. Note item 1 identifies the "Source" as Eiff. This format (with reference to the "Source") is typical of how these E & E interviews were done. (The misspellings can possibly be attributed to how Eiff remembered the names.)

This list of MIS-X interviews :

http://www.conscript-heroes.com/esca...-Fort-Hunt.htm

shows the Eiff interview as number 371 (on page 4 of the series). These interviews on page 4 are not on-line (as the first 3 pages are) but can be ordered on CDs from the Air Force Historical Research Agency. Eiff's is on CD A1315 .

All of a sudden the interviewed Eiff is named as Source in the crew list.
Also many names are misspelled or lacking given names.

May I ask you Fred, from where did you get the pilot's name?
It seems 2/Lt Gerald Wagner at least is the correct one.

From the book of Thomas McKelvey Cleaver "Bridgebusters - The True Story of the Catch-22 Bomb Wing":
In the B-25 immediately behind "026" pilot First Lieutenant Damon McLain saw the entire incident: "On the turn off the target, I had just regained my position behind Lieutenant Wagner’s plane when it seemed to explode and flare out. Quite a bit of debris came out of the tail with the tail gunner. He was spread eagled with his face and chest facing the sky as he went by, passing about ten feet below our left propeller. I did not see a parachute on his chest as he went by and I don’t believe that he was wearing one. His clothes seemed to be badly torn and smoking. It was my impression that he was not conscious".

Thanks Rolland and Leo

Especially interesting to see from where the mis-identified pilots name came from!

And yes I do think the interview with Eiff and all of a sudden calling him Source is odd, even in the crew list, since he is clearly identified at the top.

Can't see what NARA has to do with that and what they should do even if I talked to them? The document is what it is and cannot be changed!

Cheers
Stig
