Major Helm is not listed among the officers serving in II/NJG 1. Source KTB II/NJG 1.

Interesting Jörn

Since we seem to have a rather big mix up here between Helm and Hemm,
did Helm actually serve with II./NJG 2 at all?

Is it possible that we are dealing with Alfred Hemm instead for all three claims?
Hemm is the night fighter individual while Helm is the transport - BFS individual?
Maybe Helm's "spill over" into Erprobungsstelle für Nacht-Jagdverfahren has also been made into a
connection with NJG 2 and 1?

Just a thought
Cheers
Stig

Re: Maj Alfred Hemm

Hello all,

I can confirm that Major Helm obtained 3 victories with the II./NJG 2, some surviving original Abschusstafel of the II./NJG 2 (later renamed in IV./NJG 1) shows these victories as the 143th, 159th and 178th Abschuss of the II./NJG 2 alias IV./NJG 1.

According to Ab A. Jansen's three volume history of Leeuwarden airfield ('Wespennest Leeuwarden' / Hornest nest Leeuwarden) Helm was leading a detachment of Funkmess Erprobungsstelle Werneuchen in Leeuwarden.

As I said, Helm therefore is not to be confused with Major Alfred Hemm who served with the I./NJG 1 later in the war.

Best regards, Marcel

Re: Maj Alfred Hemm

Thanks Marcel

Good to have settled this.
So Alfred Helm is back again with three claims, the difference is now that he scored all three with
II./NJG 2

Thanks for that confirmation!!

Cheers
Stig

Hello,

There is also an excerpt from the flight log of the "TVK Werneuchen" with Major Alfred Helm's Enemy flights at the IV./NJG 1 and II./NJG 2. Also his "Abschussbecher" survived the war.

Re: Maj Alfred Hemm

Very interesting. It would be great to get to the bottom of the veracity of Helm's alleged first war claims.
