If memory does not fail me (the book is not at hand now), Roman Gastager also flew some night-reconaissance sorties as mentioned on his memories.

I am puzzled by this. I know the Americans used timed photo-flash bombs for night aerial photography.

Ed - during the war, the Luftwaffe flew tens of thousands of night aerial recce missions using specially developed NRb30 and NRB40 cameras with target illumination by 40-million and 60-million candlepower flash bombs.

Add to that “security reconnaissance” flown overwater at night, often with radar. The object was to locate enemy shipping, especially landing forces.
