Berlin Battle 12sep44- 367BS/306BG

Hi ,
I am a local historian and live in the area north from Eberswalde . My brother
possesses more information to the 12.9.1944, but he can answer however in 3 weeks. But here a small piece of information .

The fallen German pilot at Finowfurt was Uffz.Walter Simon, 5./J.G.300 .
On the cemetery of Eberswalde 9 American airmen were buried at the 15.9.1944, which died at the 12.9.1944. They were exhumed at the 28.8.1947 by Americans and were carried away.

Thank you so much. I would be interested in any more details that your brother may have including either the circumstances of Ellison's death or why (if) he came to buried with the crew members of two separate B-17 crews, in the same grave. I keep wondering if there was some connection.

I suspect that to be true as all five were transferred to the same grave location in Belgium

It is Lt James Ellison - I don't know why I wrote 'john' in the first post

Bill, Do you know the code on Ellison's P-51D? I was wondering if the the one in Vol. 1, JG300 might have been his a/c. It looks like the code on the side is IV D.

I think that Lt.Ellison flew the P-51B # 43-7182 ,Code WR-Y.

Reiner is correct - Ellison was flying WRY (ex Dragon Wagon) 43-7182. This P51B was Jim Duffy's ship who was on leave at the time.

IV D would have been a 359th Mustang.

Reiner - were there any descriptions of the damage to 43-7182 in the LW reports of the crash site?

A new trace?
In 2003 I had contact with a man from Eberswalde. He told me about the crash of a P-51 northeast of Eberswalde, named Nordend. On this crashsite he found this B-15 flight jacket. What could mean this number ? Unfortunately this man died a short time later.

Hi Rene -

It was required by regulations for U.S. military personnel to mark their military issue clothing items with the initial of their last name followed by the last 3 or 4 numbers of their military service number. The purpose was to prevent theft and to provide identification if the clothing item was lost or found. Mine, used from 1957 to 1968, was D-9061.

New research and new documents would provide information on the crash site of the P-51B of Ellison.
Fl.H.Kdtr Finow / Mark reported the crash of an American fighterplan at 11:30 am. Aircraft crashed in flames, pilot believed under the wreck. Place: Eichwerder, Ortsrandsiedlung.
Plane (airunit) can not be determined. For me it is the only known P-51 crash in this area.
The next P-51 crash is near Müncheberg (Lt.Broadwater). He was buried in Werder 4km SE Müncheberg.
I think that Ellison was able to leave his plane. Probably he was immediately found, but could not be assigned to the fighter crash. The death places of many Airmen were spread over the large area of Eberswalde.
