Re: Robert Johnson vs Egon Mayer-Urban myth?
Co-incidence or not?
Funny that the unverified claim that day was made by another Mayer! Mix up perhaps? Cheers Stig |

Re: Robert Johnson vs Egon Mayer-Urban myth?
The 2nd edition of "Die Ritterkreuzträger der Luftwaffe, Band 1" is all in German whereas the 1st edition was half German/ half English, so more room for comments. The quote is "Am 26.6.43 brachte er drei P-47 Thunderbolt zum Absturz ...."
Hope this helps. George |

Re: Robert Johnson vs Egon Mayer-Urban myth?
What was the serial number of Johnson's P-47 on this day?
It would seem that it was not Cat 'E', being repaired and sent to the 36FG and lost 13 Aug 44. |

Re: Robert Johnson vs Egon Mayer-Urban myth?
Hi
Roger Freeman in "Wolfpack Warriors" indicates that Johnson slightly exaggerated the details of this combat and that his attacker was actually shot down by a fellow 56th FG pilot (I have not got the book to hand so I cannot remember who) Cheers Bruce Lander |

Re: Robert Johnson vs Egon Mayer-Urban myth?
Hi
just checked "Wolfpack Warriors" - the pilot who claimed Bob Johnsons attacker was in fact Gerald Johnson Bruce Lander |

Re: Robert Johnson vs Egon Mayer-Urban myth?
It makes a lot of Mayers and Johnsons involved in this single action!
