Re: Photo Nieuport
Well Clint
Actually I didn't bother to look at the British Nieuport. Just checked my French and US (Casari) sources. I have no idea how the SFA or Nieuport worked with their order/deliveries. I just can't believe SFA ordered their aircraft in such a complete mess/disorder. It is more likely that Nieuport, for some reason, was allowed to deliver the ordered aircraft in the terrible mix up we are now facing. Neither can I understand why SFA and Aviation Militaire allowed Nieuport to waste time and Government money developing all those incredible amount of different types whose performance improvement was basically none.... I take it you still don't have Casari's book? I can scan the relevant Nieuport pages for you if you like. If interested send me an e-mail. I have the same one. Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Nieuport
Stig, I shall ponder on regarding the subject of how the SFA/Nieuport allocated the numbers in such an apparently confusing manner.
However, I have looked at the photo of N.2664 again and think I see a projecting engine cylinder behind the guy's elbow - if so probably the machine is a Nieuport 21 after all. So serial and type probably correct all that is needed now is the id of the individual who flew this machine. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Nieuport
Hello,
I'm looking for assistance in identifying the full serial number and pilot of the Nieuport (24?) shown in the photo from delcampe below. The last two figits of the serial are 96 and I believe that the legs of the Cat emblem of N 87 are visible. https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...080432008.html Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Nieuport
Clint as it's not a recognised number it's probably B8844 an ARD-rebuild in a block B8831--B9030 ( No.3 ARD Bristol); these were several types including RE8s and Sopwiths.
( just found that B8844 was allocated to a BE2e at 3ARD and A8844 was a Spad VII). I would think it could only be A or B for a Nieuport 17. Nick Last edited by Buckeye30; 10th August 2024 at 08:55. |

Re: Photo Nieuport
Nick,
Thanks for the reply. I'm glad it is not just my questionable eyesight that lead to the posting of the question.A rebuild seems the likely answer. However, like yourself I've noted that http://airhistory.org.uk/rfc/aircraft.html gives either a B.E.2e or Spad S.VII as the possibilties. An error on their part? Puzzling. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Nieuport
Sorry Guys, whenever I tried TOCH has been down or my internet very shaky...
Surely the digits for the third aircraft are 6844 and not 8844? I can't reach the the site listed by Clint, so perhaps one of you can check it out for us? Cheers Stig Last edited by Stig Jarlevik; 10th August 2024 at 17:48. |
