I thought I could extremely faintly see "494" Paul, so maybe you have a point here.

Is this one of the all black intruder Hurricanes? No roundels on the top wings?
If so, why no cannons?
I actually initially dismissed it as pretty uninteresting. Hopefully someone can make a bit more out of it than me....

It certainly looks like 4841 to me, which by the production list I have would make it Z4841, a Hurricane I from Block 3 produced by from Gloster as part of an order for 1700 a/c. The block was delivered between July 1940 and August 1941, this a/c possibly early in 1941 if they were produced in serial number order. 53 of the block were used as instructional/maintenance airframes.

Just one problem here Peter

Z4841 was used by one single operational squadron, 237, which never was in Europe (Italy) until 1944.
Z4841 caught fire in the air and was abandoned 22 Nov 1941, the same day the unit officially moved to LG 128 in North Africa
