Nick - the 4x50 cal wing armament was common to the A-36, P-51A and P-51B/C.

The A-36 was the last Mustang with cowl mounted 50 caliber and only one with Dive Brakes except for the Mustang I test vehicle with both dive brakes and wing bomb/fuel rack installation.

AAF MC posted a memo in 1944 that mandated all NAA fighters including A-36, P-51-1-NA; P-51A, P-51B/C; P-51D/K were Mustangs.

John Voll: P-51B 9-2-0; 12-2-2 in P-51D

Good afternoon drondog,

thanks.
That breakdown renders George Preddy the top P-51D ace (18 victories) and Glenn Eagleston the top P-51B ace (18,5 victories), right ?

Have a nice Tuesday,

Michael

Re: P-51 Mustang & A-36 Apache

Can I suggest that will be a nice little research task for you. A bit of primary research in the archives cannot be beaten

For each ace, find out what a/c they flew on each mission and then look up whether it was a B/C or a D/K. Should not take you very long.

If you apply a bit of mathematical probability to the research you do not have to look at everyone.

Let us know what you find

Re: P-51 Mustang & A-36 Apache

This is the first OSPREY AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES volume I ever bought. It covers the A-36 top ace Mr. Russo and the F-6 top ace Mr. East:
https://www.amazon.de/Mustang-Ninth-...s%2C146&sr=8-1

This is the first OSPREY AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES volume ever published. It covers the P-51 top ace Mr. Preddy:
https://www.amazon.de/Mustang-Eighth...s%2C157&sr=8-2

I also acquired this one but I haven't read it yet:

Re: P-51 Mustang & A-36 Apache

I ain't got this volume:
https://www.amazon.com/RAF-Mustang-T.../dp/1846039797
and I wonder if the RAF Mustang grand total score is known.
PMoz99 was so kind to post the top RAF Mustang aces:

Re: P-51 Mustang & A-36 Apache

According to Edward Rippeth the Mustang has 110 kills listed for eight RAF aces and near aces. Therefore, he estimates that the Commonwealth forces scored about 185 kills with the Mustang. Has the exact number ever been determined?
