Is this the R.4 Type 8? or R.12 The engines appear distinct from those of standard R.4 I've seen.

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft

Clint

My pennies are on a R.4 (three bay)
The R.4 type 8 was a one off aircraft (not even mentioned by André Hauet), which among other things
seems to have strengthened struts.
As far as I know there is no known photo of the R.12 but according to both Hauet and Soltan/Davilla it was
a re-engined R.11 and as such had only a two-bay wing span.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft

Hi Stig,

You see the engines as Renault 12Db then? That is the only source of my uncertainty. It may just be the Photo being of higher quality than others I've seen of the R.4,but somehow the enhines look smaller and neater than on other R.4 photos.I certainly think the fuselage looks like that of a R.4.

Clint

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft

Well Clint

As I read Soltan/Davilla (page 164) they say the R.4 could have either the Renault 12Db or the Hispano-Suiza
8A engines.

Then French officialdom confused the matter with SFA calling the latter version R.19, while everyone else still called
them R.4

I simplify it by just calling the lot R.4....

Happy New Year to you too!

Cheers
Stig

Stig,

Currently on delcampe is a Caudron R.4 at:

https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...419300572.html

I assume since this one shows the more commonly seen engine, that this is a Renault 12Db powered machine and the one in the previous photo one with the Hispano 8Aa. Or not? I don't have the Hauet work you referred to previously. I take it that this is th WDF.Does it contain any more photos of the Hispano powered machine?

Clint

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft

At face value Clint, I would say yes to your question.

All photos (regardless of R.4 or R.11) show the Hispano engines to be triangular in shape.
Not many photos of Renault powered R.4. Those I think are of less good quality and difficult to see.
Looks much more rounded though.....

Cheers
Stig
