Re: Photo Spad
Hi Stig,
I knew Guynemer was killed during the war. I just wouldn't be able to tell him from say, MvR, in a photo. I guess I could well have included the info about not being able to identify him in the post however. With my government debauching the currency the photos would probably be a means of maintaining the value of my savings.I probably won't be buying them all though. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Spad
Well Clint
I am pretty confident the guy is Guynemer in the photo. There is another "seller-recommend" close up shot as well, this time for the nice and even sum of EUR 500. Perhaps you should ask Boris for a hand out?? Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Spad
Hi Stig,
I'm happy to accept your id, and in fact if ebay had worked as normal when you request the sellers other items in time order I'd also have seen Spads S 122 and S 112 and concluded that given all three machines were early Spad VII aircraft that it was wartime. All embarassment free. But for some reason that didn't work in this case. If Boris has got any sense (I know, I know) Rishi Sunak will be bidding on the photos himself in order to replace the inflated cash. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Spad
SPAD 224 is interesting, Lt. Mistarlet was shot down (POW) 6 April 1917 by Bongartz Jasta 36 (his first victory); the undercarriage was damaged on landing and crosses were painted over the cocardes but the badge was left on. Painted on the fuselage was " Abgeschossen von der Jagdstaffel 36".
Stephen Lawson did an article in "Cross and Cockade 20-1" on Js36, though Mistarlet is shown in a Nieuport ( unconfirmed, by Dossenbach) and Bongartz' SPAD flown by Lt. Lorrillard KIA ( confirmed ) evidently the names reversed. Nick ( Just checked another Grub St. book and Lorrillard was in SPAD VII 164 ( N.48), KIA after balloon attack). Re: Photo Spad
Hi Nick,
Thanks. Spad S.VII 224 seems to have been much photographed having done an image search on Duck Duck Go. Strange that it should crop up with the sellers other photos, the Spad S.VII B3506 and in the Albatros D.III and Albatros D.V threads on this board. I guess Jastas 36 and 24 must have been based close to each other at some stage unless postcards of S.224 were widely distributed, which I suppose is not unlikely. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Spad
Hi Clint. B3506 WAS shot down by Jasta 24, by H. Kroll ( 10th victory) 12 Sept. 1917 near Menin; pilot was 2/Lt. S W Dronsfield POW. So a connection there somehow.
