Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft

The 2 DH-4s are 91st Aero ( kinght and devil insignia) in the overall Khaki 160 late 1918.
The LUSAC P-54 was 42138 at McCook Field.

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft

Hello,

Currently on ebay are photos of two USAAS aircraft at:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Biplane-pho...8AAOSw1g9fN6qJ

2800 is a Curtiss JN-4D, while the other aircraft is a DH-4 of some kind. The photos may be wartime or possibly the 1920s, the seller appears uncertain.

There is also a seperate photo of a JN-4D 2589 at:

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft

Clint

The group with four aircraft were all most likely taken at Kelly Field around 1919-20. Two photos visibly have ASMS on their fuselages and the JN-4D added text "Kelly-Field". A third photo has the building in the background also carrying the same letters.
Reason for the appx date is that the "rear-ending" DH-4 seems to carry the serial 32167. That aircraft did not come off the production line until about November-December 1918.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft

Hello Stig,

Thanks for that. I could see that the DH-4 had a serial of some kind on top of the rudder, but couldn't read it. If you're happy with 32167 I can go with that.

Clint

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo album containing many wwi related items at:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/16-WWI-POST...EAAOSwFD5fPYhY

Many of the items are not aircraft related , but there are photos of Curtiss N-8 serial No.60 and Curtiss JN-4 serial No.134.

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft

Looks quite like the prototype alright

I confess I have for some time now wondered if this seller includes the pens when you have clinched a deal with him?.....

Cheers

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft

Hi Stig,

Yes, with my lack of knowledge of US military aircraft of the era, several edits were necessary until I noted the text with the helpful serial number.

With regard to the pens, the quality of the pen needs to improve if the attempted bribe is to be successful. I might be cheap, but not that cheap

Clint

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft

Hmmm

I thought you had bought the Casari book by now???!!!
Honestly Clint, one of the best books Aeronaut ever produced!!

Pens.....oh well.....even if cheap, a pen is always a pen....of course something the younger generation ain't seen nothing of....

Ahhh, sweet youth. I still remember quite fondly the pencils we used to chew on. Sharpening one's teeth you know.....like young beavers.....

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photos USAAS Aircraft

Speaking of youth, upon seeing the GMB photos, I had a wistful moment when I recalled the Kenneth Munson books, the ones with the profiles showing in one half the machine from the underside, and the other half the upper side of the aircraft, these beeing the first aircraft books I had and the first time I saw a GMB. Still got the book somewhere, but never unpacked it along with many others when I moved here.

Regards,

Clint
