Re: Erich Etienne- Polar Explorer
[quote=welles_is;131051]I was wondering if someone can give me some more information on Erich Etienne. About 25-30 years ago, I purchased from a US vet a Honor Goblet that was presented to Mr. Etienne's family after his plane was shot down over Norway while returning from a polar exploration. The inscription in the Goblet reads: Wetterdienstassessor ERICH ETIENNE AM 18 10 42.

Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer
John, that's pretty unfortunate about the cigarette case, but the main thing is the goblet. As you know, there were very few awards issued during the III. Reich that were named.

Re: Dr. Erich Etienne- Polar Explorer WW2
Hi,
Refering to Dr. Etienne as a Nazi was a mistake. It truely was not ment as an insult to the man, his family or accomplishments. I tried to edit the post but couldn't. Any ideas how to edit the post would be appreciated. I wanted to say " Dr. Erich Etienne - Polar Explorer WW2." Again, my apologies. Rgs, John |

Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer
There are several references to Dr. Etienne in the following books:
Schwerdtfeger, Werner; Selinger, Franz. Wetterflieger in der Arktis 1940-1944 (Stuttgart: Motorbuch Verlag, 1982) ISBN 3-87943-854-4. - This book is a history of Wekusta 5 (weather recon squadron 5) which operated in the arctic flying up to Spitzbergen. Vocke, Dr. Ernst. Die Wetterflieger (Zweibrücken: VDM Heinz Nickel Verlag, 2002). ISBN: 3-925480-61-7. - This book is mainly about the civilian weather flyers and has references to Dr. Etienne. Kington, John A,; Selinger, Franz. Wekusta - Luftwaffe Meteorological Reconnaissance Units & Operations 1938-1945 (Bracknell: Flight Recorder Publications Ltd., 2006). ISBN 0-9545605-8-2. - received 2009? - This book is still in print and is in English. It contains 7 references to Dr. Etienne in the index. He appears in 2 photos. Coincidently, it may amuse you that 35 years ago I was an weather observer in the arctic for over 2 years. At one point I was stationed at Alert, the most northerly station in the world. |

Re: Erich Etienne-Nazi Polar Explorer
Alert,N.W.T, is station CYLT located at latitude 82.5 degrees North on the north shore of Ellesmere Island, some 510 mile from the North Pole. My job was to launch and track weather balloons to over 100,00 feet height twice a day in order to establish temperature and humidity profiles and to measure the upper winds. Secondary tasks were to take air samples and service the neutron and meson counters and maintain the RF1 and RF 4 radiation sensors.
My other posting was for 737 days at CYUX at DEW Line Station Fox Main. |

Those were the good old days, with the DEW line.
