Re: Luftwaffe losses PQ18 September 1942

Hi guys

Two final (?) questions relating to PQ18

Who were the Soviet pilots who claimed the two Ju88s on 20 September?

Who were the three Sea Hurricane pilots who were shot down, baled and rescued on 14 September? I know one was a Lieutenant since I have a photo of him about to be pulled out of the sea by crew of HMS Wheatland!

I note that Sub-Lt(A)s AR Laurie, IP Garrow and PJ Williams (Sea Hurricane pilots) were awarded DSCs for their actions
on this date. Has anyone seen their citations, or know of any contacts with kin? (all were lost when Avenger was sunk in November 1942)

Cheers
Brian

Re: Luftwaffe losses PQ18 September 1942

Hi,
According to "Fleet Air Arm Aircraft 1939 to 1945" three Hurricanes downed on 14th September are: Lt. EWT Taylour* (14.15), Lt. GM Torrance (one minute later), and unidentified pilot (14.26), all from 802 NAS.

*This must be an error. "Britan's Fleet Air Arm" by Ron Mackay claimed that all pilots were fished alive and Lt Taylour was killed on 13th September by return fire from BV 138 flying boat.

Claims for 802. NAS:
S-Lt(A)s AR Laurie: 2 He 111
S-Lt IP IP Garrow: Ju 88 and He 111
S-Lt PJ Williams: Ju 88
Brown Section: He 111 propably includes Laurie He 111

883 NAS:
1 He 111 propable + 1 He 111 shared with "White Section (Lt PWV Massy?)"

Hi Gizmo

Thanks. However, these are the names and details that I gave Ray in the belief that they were correct. I was hoping for confirmation from another source.

Cheers
Brian
