Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

natttuppen, thank you kindly for this.

Do the photo caption have any dates? For the staffel badge, is the bomb white or black?

Black numbers, this could be interesting but then, maybe the Jabo unit had aircraft donated from two or even all three staffeln of III. Gruppe? Do the black numbers appear as dark as the Balkenkreuz - if lighter, maybe these are blue which would be correct as the 4th staffel.

regards,
Jack

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

According to the book by Dr Prien et al, the colour of the a/c number in 10.(Jabo)/JG 27 was green. The bomb on the staffel-badge was black
Below the photo-captions, in German: "Abb 381.

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

natttuppen, thanks again.

Google translate leaves me thinking this set of photos are of Jabogruppe Afrika and later. An older thread from here seems to confirm that both jabo units from JG 27 and 53 would still be referred to as such, even when absorbed by the larger formations.
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=49033

It is still possible that the JG 27 staffel in question, adopted the bomb over Africa during it's first four months of existence, since it pretty much was stationed at the same airfields of JG 53's jabo.

---------------------

I'm guessing the emblem sidney introduced to us was a very early design, and at some point was dropped in favour of the bomb over Africa motif? I did find an emblem for
I./Schl. G. 2 where Jabo JG27 would eventually reside.

It is a black stylized bird over a red diamond, it's image can be seen here at top of page:

Only sidney, though can offer if there is any relationship between the two bagdes - replace black bird with white and turn it on it's head for diving orientation??

regards,
Jack

Jack, I can confirm that the two emblems were not related, and that there is no similarity between the two. The stylized "bird" over a red diamond is much earlier design. Can't remember the owner now, believe that it was associated with II.(Schlacht)/LG 2.

Sinisa

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

Jack,

On this page https://www.asisbiz.com/Luftwaffe/jg27.html you can see how the 10.(Jabo)/JG 27 emblem would approximately look like - just scroll down to what the website owner calls IV. Gruppe. Note that the emblem did not have background - it was applied all in white directly on the Luftwaffe desert camouflage.

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

Sidney, THANKS!
That's the one with the blue over red background, and also looks to be an asterisk/star above the bird?

Geez, a rattlesnake would of bit me ... I noticed that one before but passed by it because directly underneath in small white type was printed 9./JG27

regards,
Jack

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

Jack.

Yes, that is the one. The blue over red background perhaps meant to represent the aircraft desert camouflage - sand yellow and light blue.

Sinisa

Post Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

here are two photos that appeared in the one time magazine " air combat " perhaps this is the emblem in question, either for the 9th or 10staffel.

Re: Jabo staffel JG 27

Trevor, that is right on, thank you for those period photos.

It looks to be the same 'yellow 10' Sinisa had described earlier. Of special note, the white theater band does not extend completely around the fuselage, omitted where the III.Gruppe wavy bar symbol is.

Appears to be a photo op for the British/Commonwealth forces (along with two dogs and a goat). Curious to the date and location, possibly overrun Axis airfield, but more likely a downed jabo fighter over Allied territory?

regards,
Jack
