Re: Mr Christopher Shore's new project

I was able to obtain Fighters Over The Desert in the fall of 1970. It was indeed a "game changer." I take this opportunity to thank Mr. Shores for his work.

Nokose will become famous soon enough
Re: Mr Christopher Shore's new project

Has anyone heard anything recently about the progress on these books? I noticed a few months ago that quite a few of the original volumes (used) had come out as "for sale".

Hi Nokose.

They are being very actively worked on at the moment by Chris and his team. Early next year would be the soonest at a guess.

Cheers

Russell

A reprint of "Fighters Over Tunisia" would be nice.

More a rewrite than a reprint, as I understand it.

Re: Mr Christopher Shore's new project

Recently posted at Amazon.UK. Nothing yet at the Grub Street Publishing website (delayed?).

Does anyone know if Hata & Izawa contributed to this revised edition?

Edward

Japanese Naval Air Force Fighter Units and Their Aces, 1932-1945

Ikuhiko Hata, Yasuho Izawa and Christopher Shores
Grub Street (October 29, 2010)
Hardcover 416 pages

"This book is a companion volume to "Japanese Army Air Force Fighter Units and Their Aces, 1931-1945", published by Grub Street in 2002. As such it also represents a major updating and rewriting of Messrs Hata's and Izawa's earlier book of similar title, published in the USA some 20 years ago. The book commences with a comprehensive account of the operations of navy fighter units throughout the period under review. This is followed by individual sections detailing the history and achievements of each unit involved, be it land-based or aircraft carrier-based. A major section then provides biographical details regarding all pilots claiming eight or more aerial victories. As might be expected of such a work, prolific appendices provide detailed listings of all pilots known to have claimed five or more victories (and thus considered to be 'aces'); listings of the graduation from training of all Japanese Navy fighter pilots, and of fighter pilot casualties. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs, maps and artist's side-view drawings and paintings of aircraft relevant to each of the units described. "

Re: Mr Christopher Shore's new project

This sounds similar to Larry Hickey's EOE project for 39-40, but for the Med. in this case. Here's to their success -

Re: Mr Christopher Shore's new project

With regard to Japanese Naval Air Force Fighter Units and Their Aces, 1932-1945, I do not know Dr Hata's part in the new edition. Dr Izawa did extensive research in the Japanese archives in recent years, reviewing all the existing records he could locate. Chris Shores' part was in editing Yasuho's English version (I do not know if there is to be a Japanese version of this new edition), and adding material on the Allies. So yes, it is a pretty complete revision of the original.

With regard to the Mediterranean series Chris expects to turn in the manuscript for the first volume (June 1940 to mid-Jan 1942) by the end of the year. I don't know that an exact publication date has been set. The period from Jan 1942 to May 1943 will probably require at least two volumes. The next volume he will concentrate on will be the period May to Oct 1943; then he will probably go back to the 1942-43 period, for at least one volume. Further details depend on the March Of Time. His health however is still quite good. He will be in Texas for the American Fighter Aces Association convention this weekend (Sept 23-26), so those attending can ask him further questions.

Enjoy!

Frank.
