Hi Kaki. 782 was "Boiler Maker II" came down close to her target ( White IV) after hitting a chimney; apparently she had a wing replaced by the Rumanians from another B-24D which crashed on the mission. This was 42-40265 "Honkey Tonk Gal" an OD / NG plane from the 93BG (targets White II and III). 782 in Sand camouflage had only part of her insignia up-dated, bars on fuselage and plain wing stars. Letter "E", 265 was "W-bar" as she was Eighth AF.

B-17F 42-29776 (379BG) lost on Mission 115 to Schweinfurt Oct. 14 1943; MACR 1353 and Mission summary says collided head-on with a 109 though the 379th lead bombardier and the service record of radio operator on 776 (J M Ehrenzeller) say a 190. Amazingly a waist gunner survived as POW. The 379th lost 6 from 17 dispatched.

Thanks Nick. Yes, amazing things happened during the war. A lot of high-speed attackers and being under fire usually leads to some confusion.
