Re: Photo Spad
This photo has been part of an Album where it said the aircraft came down on an airfield near Reims on 23-5-17 (only the digits 17 are 100% certain). The date in that album is probably wrong or I am unable to read correctly the digits....
The Denis site is no help here, but it is probably also not complete. At least one pilot WIA on 3-5-1917 is not included in his list. Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Spad
Hello Stig,
I must admit I didn't check the Albin Denis site before posting. I see after doing so, that the same photo is shown there and the source is Greg van Wyngarden. I personally don't have anything he's written that's Spad related, but I wonder if there is more information inone of his publications? Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Spad
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo captioned as a Romanian Spad S.XIII at: https://www.ebay.de/itm/Rumanien-Rumanische-Ostfront-1WK-WW1-Technik-Foto-Flugzeug-Plane-SPAD-S-XIII-04/324333644994?hash=item4b83caacc2:gX0AAOSwVRZfhwX J Romania did not operate the Spad S.XIII and the personnel appear french, so either a Romanian Spad S.VII or a Spad S.XIII of a french unit? Re: Photo Spad
Hi Clint
Since the seller claims basically everything in sight as a SPAD XIII it is good to watch out what he says and be cautious. However Romania did operate the SPAD XIII. After they had bought 39 S.VII in 1919 they followed that up by buying 19 S.XIII the following year. The one seen here looks like it still carries French colours on the fin, but in all fairness could be just after delivery and before any national colours had been applied. From the photos I have seen at least the fuselage did not carry any national markings at all and the camo remained as it was when delivered. The fin also seems to have remained in French colours, at least for a while, but I have far too few photos (all on top undated) to actually make any commitment about that. All this was gathered from the Dan Antoniu and his book 'Illustrated history of Romanian Aeronautics' If anyone should make a useful comment, I suppose Dénes is the one that comes to mind. Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Spad
Hi Stig,
Thanks for the info on the Romanian Spad S.XIIIs. Looks like I was let down there by Soltan and Davila, which is a bit surprising. I did see mention of Romanian use of the type elsewhere on the net but wrongly concluded no S &D, no Spad. I'm now a wiser man. Thanks. Regards, Clint |
