The green shamrock (not clover) was 87 CTS at Benbrook TX winter 1917/18 ( o/c included Capts W H Dore and R H B Kerr). They were at Rathbun earlier in the year, next to Mohawk (JN-4A).
The red cross on white shield was 85 CTS at Mohawk, Ontario 1918 Capt L R Andrews; these units changed their insignia at various times (JN-4(Can)).

4. "Y" Sqn./ 92CRS ("Y" + fin letter).
5. 90 CRS ( skull).
6. 81 CRS ("T" + number on fuselage).
7. 78 CTS (2 or 3 narrow bands).
.......CRS = Canadian Reserve Sqn. CTS = Canadian Training Sqn. (Oct. 1917).

Clint. The JN-2 serial SC.48 was wrecked during the Mexican operations, 20 March 1916; it was fitted with JN-3 wings. They would normally have the very early insignia, a red star on the rudder.
( the caption says " on the Mexican border").
This batch was serials 41-48 but the "S.C." was omitted on the fuselage.

The C-2 is probably best known for its employment by Lawrence Sperry in the development of his 1913 automatic pilot. A photo of it exists flying over the Seine near Bezons in June 1914 with both Sperry and his crewman standing outside the cockpit.

I am curious, why did the Model F C-2 go to France. Did it specifically travel that distance to check the technology by flying large distances over water?
