Re: Photo Morane Saulnier

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of a rare Morane Saulnier aircraft, I believe it is an early form of the Morane Saulnier AN at :

https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Biplan-MORAN...4AAOSwxRpfA1gX

It somewhat resembles the Morane Saulnier ANB, but the wing mounted radiators on the macchine in the link are distinctive. Can anyone definitively identify the aircraft shown as the early AN?

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Morane Saulnier

Hello Clint

Yes, it’s the early Morane AN. Low drag and good visibility were not in the specifications... 1917 seems however too early. Interesting photo, indeed.

Jean

Re: Photo Morane Saulnier

Hi Jean,

Davilla and Soltan have construction starting in Jan 1918 and evaluation at the STAe from 27 October of that year,so 1917 definitely too early. Is the serial number of the machine known at all?

Clint

Re: Photo Morane Saulnier

Hello Clint

October 27 is also given by Albert Eteve (la victoire des cocardes, 1970). For the serial number further research is needed, but hope is little. I put that on my list for the reopening of our local aviation library here in Lyon, closed for summer holidays and flying diseases.

Jean

Re: Photo Morane Saulnier

Hello,

Currently onebay is a photo of the Morane Saulnier Type X, or so I believe at:

https://www.ebay.fr/itm/retirage-avi...MAAOSwlvpf6MgB

Although the photo is marked as a reprint, a photo of the Type X was new to me, if that is what is shown. It looks like Type X is written on the rudder. However, the aircraft looks very like the Type S, but with different engines, possibly 300 hp Panhard as mentioned by Davilla and Soltan. The serial of the Type S was MS.625, whereas to me the last number on the rudder does not appear to be a 5, but possibly and 8 or 9.So is this photo already well known and if so, what is the full serial?

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Morane Saulnier

Hi Clint

If you look again you will see the same 'photo shoot' is in Soltan-Davilla's book under type S. They claim only one was built (this one) and from other photos taken from the other side, yes it is No 625.

However I agree with you, it seems very much to say Type X on the rudder (none of the other photos I have seen from the photo shoot show that!).

Checking what the French expertise has written about it, the latest info I have is that all of a sudden two MS Type S were built and MS 625 was in fact the second one. All sources however agree, the Type X was not built!

With a little figment of imagination, could the second MS Type S have been modified as Type X and that is what we are looking at?

Cheers
Stig
