For quick identification of a plane on the ground, the last three digits were more important?

You mean like a quick reminder, when talking/writing about the aircraft you only need to mention the last three digits?

Hmmm, well at least it's an idea.....

Re: eBAy: Captured german planes

Maybe....

The rudders were produced elsewere and all got the number for the Wnr series 123xxx, they could then be fitted to any of the airframes wich got the 3 final numer for the Wnr serie.

Just a guess

Further to your query, and as to the possible reason for this practice, another photo of W.Nr. 230 459 found by Michael Balss is even more intriguing : http://www.americanairmuseum.com/med...8yGmClPZb6RTVU

You can clearly see there was another W.Nr. (?) 581 painted at the base of the tail... I'm at a loss here.

Cheers

Yes, that’s it. I’ve seen strength reports in ULTRA that list aircraft like this: “4 Bf 109 G-6: 160750, 751, 752, 753” (not from a real message, just an illustration of how they were sometimes written when there several in the same series).

Re: eBAy: Captured german planes

To Marc,

"581" is the grouping of the first 3 digits of a 4-digit manufacturer's number as opposed to the RLM W.Nr. These appear on a number of Ju 188s. I have seen references to manufacturer's numbers in addition to RLM W.Nr. for at least one other type.

Re: eBAy: Captured german planes

Hello Marc and everyone,
I’ve posted on this before, but the numerals seen on some Ju 188 D-2’s below Werknummern on their tails (or in the case of Ju 188 A-3 LT’s, on their noses), are not WNrn. Rather, they are a codex (my designation) that was applied when the airframes were modified. The codex on Ju 188 D-2, WNr. 230459 (Post #4035), was 5581.
Other examples found on ATG-Leipzig-built Ju 188 D-2 near WNr. 230459 include:
230405 = 5679 D
230424 = 5747
230447 = 5588 D
230756 = 5224 D2 U3
Examples found on Siebel-Halle-built Ju 188 A-3 (LT) include:
190312 = 5222 S A3
190317 = 5309 A3 S
190319 = 5180 A3 S
Respectfully,
Steve Sheflin

Dear ArtieBob and Steve,
