Re: Photo Voisin

Anything Russian WW 1 is always interesting

At face value it seems to be the same aircraft, but I have a problem to reconcile the two stated locations since both cannot be correct, or were the borders that different in those days? Many places are called Angern and with the help of Google the only one I can find is Angern in Latvia (todays Engure)

Not very good at uniforms either, but they seem to be German and Austro-Hungarian to me.

Pity we cannot see any unit markings but at least the Russian cockade is visible in one photo. I wonder if it is included in the captured aircraft list available.
Have you checked Grosz?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Voisin

Hello Stig,

I must agree that the guard at least looks to be of KuK origin, the officer is a little more ambiguous, but I could be mistaken in either, or indeed both cases.

I've looked up various possibilities for the location of Angern and to my mind both of the most likely locations for a captured Russian Voisin are in Lettland. However, that seems a little far north for KuK troops.

I have now checked Grosz and there is no mention of a captured Russian Voisin, so I'm increasingly tempted to go with the individuals shown as being German, possibly the non officer is a policeman ?.

Clint

Re: Photo Voisin

Thanks Clint

Sounds pretty much like you are correct.
The officer looks much like a German and the guard could very well be something within the Latvian local police force.

Then of course we could forget any KuK connection and of course the capture is by the Germans.

I don't believe any list of captured flying objects exist from their side, does it?

Can't remember seeing one....
We are soon leaving our hotel and I will not be back home until very late this evening.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Voisin

Hi Stig,

As far as I'm aware no complete list of aircraft captured by the German armed forces exists. I would imagine a book on the subject might have some commercial possibilities. Beuteflugzeuge - A Centenial Perspective perhaps, if Jack Herris has a spare moment. I guess the problem is that unlike the British or the KuK forces, no numerical/serial system was introduced to mark aircraft captured by Germany.

I hope you had a good and relaxing time on your travels.

Regards,

Clint
