Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong
I can concur with Matti that the EM number is B65153/21. This is also in his Soldbuch. The NVM lists a number without a B and is difficult to read, so you could see variations.
RAF Crashed Enemy Aircraft Report No. 264 lists the following loss; Fw 190, Opglabbeek, WN.682792, BMW801, Burned out and looted. This is von Fassong's a/c, so we know he crashed near Opglabbeek. Must have been one of the unknowns that have been buried at Margraten (likely) or Lommel (less likely). When Ron passed away I took over his Bodenplatte material. This was primarily Allied as after a few years of research we decided he would do the Allied side and I the German side. All information that was double or was other information (he was working on several projects) is now at the NIMH (Dutch Armed Forces Military Historical Institute) in The Hague and can be researched. Unfortunately his final research (last couple of years) was all digital and that was lost. John Last edited by John Manrho; 22nd January 2020 at 23:23. Reason: typo |

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong
Good morning,
I wonder who invented the Fassong-136-kills-myth and why. Some fellow said that to Kurt Tanzer's score of 43 a "1" was added to receive 143 kills. Was a possible Fassong score of 68 doubled ?? Have a nice weekend, Michael |

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong
Hi Michael
Regarding the "136" yes double 68, have found several pilots where their true totalis half that previously quoted......don't know why. By memory Von Fassong was wounded in 1941 and spent two year out of combat, I should think he didn't get so many during 1945, and the "western points system" isn't the answer, maybe many unconfirmed. To add to the mystery I have one abschussmeldung for him(3rd July 1941) in it he states "I am called PETER von Fassong and I was born in Kassel on 27th April 1919". Kind regards Johannes |

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong
Good morning Johannes,
yes, that's odd, maybe a case of split personality or an insider joke ? Scores of >100 would have granted von Fassong and von Boremski the top scorer ranks among the aristocrats. Now this title goes to Diethelm von Eichel-Streiber, doesn't it ? Have a good Thursday, Michael |

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong
Hello Johannes,
no, Wilcke didn't have the nobility article "von". His comrades called him "Fürst" (monarch) because of his noble character. Cheers, Michael |

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong
Hi Michael
I am just working through many of von Faßong's confirmation slips, on these he is referred to as "Horst" I think Günther von Lützow(109) was an aristocrat, by memory his Father was an Admiral.......what do you think? Kind Regards Johannes |

Re: Horst-Günther von Fassong
Good afternoon dear Johannes,
I have never seen Günther Lützow associated with the article von which indicates aristocracy in Germany. Maybe this means that he is not a relative of Ludwig von Lützow who fought against Napoleon and whose unit invented the German colours of Black-Red-Gold. If Günther had been a descendent of Ludwig the family would have dropped the von in the 100 years in between and I don't deem that likely. I wish you a good Sunday, Michael |
