Re: Photo Spad
Clint
Not much help here I'm afraid, but if you look at the flip side of the photo there is a date listed, 7.6.1917 The text is extremely fuzzy so not even tried to understand what it says. No idea, of course, who wrote the date, ie if it is contemporary or done by some collector afterwards. But if the date is correct SPA 98 is wrong since that unit was not created, as N 98, until 1 Jan 1918. Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Spad
Hi Stig,
Thanks for the response. It looks like its back to the start on this one. I didn't look at the rear of the photo, but as you say the date is too early for SPA.98.Unfortunately,checking traditions-air.fr it is the only unit I've seen with the diagonal fuselage band with a darker coloured central strip. Hopefully one of the board's french readers can assist both with the unit id and the type of Spad shown. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Spad
Stig-Clint this is SPAD VII B1524 23 Sqn. (assigned to Cochran-Patrick ) shot down by Paul Aue ( Jasta 10) 7 June 1917 near Menin. The POW pilot was 2/Lt. F W Illingworth on an offensive patrol. It also had a red-white striped cowling front. 23 had various fuselage markings.

Re: Photo Spad
Rather odd to see Thieffry more or less unwounded in these photos
According to Walter Pieters he was treated in three different hospitals after being shot down Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Spad
Hello,
Currently on ebay are a series of photos of Spad S.XVI of SPAbi 53 https://www.ebay.com/itm/28575624688...Bk9SR5732PfEYw The photos of the machine standing on its nose have been seen before and are stated to be S.9484 by Albin Denis. http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escad...adrille053.htm Perhaps the photos of the aircraft with 'Julot' on its tail are the same machine at a different stage in its career, perhaps a different machine. Hopefully at least some of these photos have not been previously seen as the seller has other photos of WW.I aircraft which are somewhat familiar https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_dkr...+photo&_sop=10 Regards, Clint |
