Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Thanks Faenor
Can anybody tell me why there is no RAF insignia on the tail? As this Hurricane was found at a Belgium AF Base could it have been about to be handed over to the Belgian AF? |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Faenor,
Those two Hurricane photos are not of P2573 from 607 Squadron. Many photos of P2573 show it with the engine and front of the aircraft very badly burnt. Some show the individual letter 'K' but there was no unit code on it. Also a fin flash can be seen and the buildings are different. Based on the partial serial that is visible I suggest it could be one of the following; P2833 CFF from 17 May 1940 P2873 CFF from 18 May 1940 P2973 Tangmere from 6 June 1940 P3533 CFF from 17 May 1940 All of these were almost certainly replacement aircraft ferried over to France. The dates given as being taken on charge are somewhat suspect in all cases, they could have reached France days earlier or later. Just because the vendor says it is located in Belgium is not enough proof for me. Most RAF aircraft had a fin flash applied by 10 May 1940 but not every one. If this was a Belgian aircraft it should have a large white two-digit number on the tail. It would be great if someone can reveal its identity. Regards, Martin Gleeson. |

there are my information about plane P2573: 11.5.1940 - P/O P.Dixon followed the german plane deeply to the German territory and ran out of fuel.Landed on Belgian airport Tirlemont. Whilst he was searching for fuel, his plane was damaged during the next german air and pilot return to his unit without plane which he left on the airport. There are some of other photos of the same plane from old e-bay.de auctions: http://www.modelari.org/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=2539 Plane: 3 propeller blades - probably RAF machine RAF cocarde - visible on some photos - 100% sure it is RAF plane On the photo with Ms 406, there are visible squadron codes - AF location - it is on 99% Goetsenhoven http://www.belgian-wings.be/Webpages...n_airfield.htm if you check the photos from the link above - the 3rd digit is on 100% number 5 and the next are 73. Based on these information, it is on 99,99% % P2573. Maybe I´m wrong, or we are speaking about 2 different plane - if you want, please send me PM or my e-mail is: Jaroslav.petracek1977@gmail.com. I´m just the amateur but I´m collecting the photos of Hurricane from Battle of France 1939-1940 (and now start with Battles and Blenheims) Faenor Last edited by Faenor; 18th February 2020 at 08:36. |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Thanks Faenor and Martin
I judged that this was a Belgium Air Base due to the large amount of destroyed and intact Belgian aircraft at this location. I agree with Faenor and state that this damaged Hurricane would appear to be P2573 going by the partial serial number in the photo and the details given by Faenor. Additionally I have checked out the three hangars in the photo and they check-out with those at Tirlemont Air Base (Goetsenhoven) which survived the war and into the 1950/60s. Positive identification is the sharp sloping fronts to the roofs of the hangars (the airfield had six in all). So given the facts it is Tirlemont then I would put my money on it being P2573) |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Faenor, Tom
My apologies, you are correct. It does seem to be P2573 (Dixon) as you say. The aircraft I was referring to is P2873 'K' (Blackadder) also of 607 Squadron, but damaged on 18 May 1940 and subsequently abandoned at Vitry. This is what happens when one replies at 3.40 a.m. ! Regards, Martin. |
