S/Sgt. George C. Zambo (POW)

Hi Folks,

The 15th AAF 459. BG has lost 3 bombers on the June 26, 1944 mission. S/Sgt. George C. Zambo radio operator was among the survivors who got captured and was sent to Stalag Luft III in Germany. Wondering which was his downed plane (S/N) and who were his crew members on this fateful mission? Thanks,

Gabor

Re: S/Sgt. George C. Zambo (POW)

Alex, according to the website page http://www.airwarsk.sk/history.html the S/N for Artz was 28674 not 23674. The site lists a/c crashed in Slovakia. It also lists a/c crew who "reached" Slovakia, I guess meaning the a/c crashed outside Slovakia and the crew made it there by other means.

26.06.1944 459Gr 758Sq B-24H-10-DT 41-28674 1st Lt. Lincoln E. Artz "Citrus Sadie" Hungary ? Danube R. MACR6398

Peter Kassak - both links come up Page Not Found for me.

Cheers
Peter

Crash in Slovakia is an invented story without some evidence. Crash site was now found in Hungary with photo of wreck and serial on tail

Re: S/Sgt. George C. Zambo (POW)

Hello Gabor,

in the book „Slovakian and Bulgarian Aces of WW2“ (Rajlich, Boshniakov and Mandjukov) is noted:
„… Only rotnik Gustav Lang, flying Wk-Nr 161713 'White 10', succeeded in shooting down an American aircraft. He attacked lone B-24H 41-28674, flown by 2Lt Lincoln E Artz, of the 758th Bombardment Squadron, 459th Bombardment Group. The nine crewmembers managed to bale out of the sticken bomber, which crashed at Most na Ostrove. Some were captured in Slovak territory and the rest on the Hungarian side of the border…“.

Most na Ostrove, former in German: Bruck an der Donau, today: Most pri Bratislave.

Regards
Leo

Pat Zambo s share from fc.:
Pat Zambo

Včera o 19:15

June 26, 1944.....Citrus Sadie, the old B-24 fell behind the bomb group. A lone target for the Slovakian Air Force. The Linc Artz crew all bailed out, half landing in Slovakian Territory. The other crew members, including our Dad, SSgt George Zambo, landing in Hungarian Territory. Today, I visited this sight.....the plane came down between the Turret and the tree line near Lebeny, Hungary. A field full of poppies greeted us.
