10/05/1940 He111 losses Peronnes-lez-Antoing (Belgium)

Hi !

Based on several sources two He111 are reported to have crashed at Peronnes-lez-Antoing on 10/05/1940 : one aircraft of LG1 and another of KG27.
Is this correct ?
Many thanks and best regards

Luc

Hello Luc,

I have one of the aircraft you mention but can find no trace of the KG27 machine you say came down at this location on 10 May 1940.

1./LG1 Heinkel He111H. Shot down by Hurricanes of No.607 Sqdn during armed reconnaissance and crashed between Péronnes and Antoign, south-east of Tournai, 4.15 p.m. Possibly that attacked by P/O Jay, P/O Dini, and P/O Dixon. Uffz H. Funke and Gefr H. Schneider killed. Oberfhr H-H. Thiessen and Uffz J. Meyer captured unhurt. Aircraft L1+IH a write-off.

However, I notice a 3./LG1 and a Stab II./KG27 Heinkel both came down at Ormeignies on that date. Are they maybe what you are looking for ?

Dear Alain and Peter,

Many thanks for your replies.

Are the pilots of the planes which crashed at Ormeignies Fw.Werner Hartmann (LG1) and Lt.Erwin Lisse (KG27) ?

Best regards

Luc

Re: 10/05/1940 He111 losses Peronnes-lez-Antoing (Belgium)

Luc, Peter,

the second plane that came down in Péronnes and Antoign was the He111 of 9./KG27 which crashed around the Rue des Venniaux on the eastern side of Péronnes-les-Antoign in the early morning. Although some sources also mention Lesdain, but this some 10 km more to the south of Péronnes-les-Antoign.
Of this crew only Uffz Wingerden survived by baling out. The other three (Fw Schmelz, Uffz Stramm and Uffz Leonhardt) all died in the crash and were burried in Antoign (info Mei 1940 boven België, Roba and De Decker).
This makes it more likely they indeed crashed in Péronnes-les-Antoign.

Hope this helps,
Kind regards, Pieter

Hello Pieter,

Many thanks for the location of the 9./KG27 loss. I for one had this down near Lesdain which is why I didn't find it first time of asking. Luc now has his answer.

Regards.
