Capt Theodore R Sweetland 2nd FS/52nd FG

Can anyone easily tell me what serial Spitfire he was flying when lost in action on 23 March 1943?

Re: Capt Theodore R Sweetland 2nd FS/52nd FG

Chris,
I am afraid this is not known for sure. The problem is that the MACR system started on July 1, 1943, with only some earlier losses added later. On this date five Spitfires of the 31st and 52nd FGs were lost. From a 12th AF document I found in NARA II (College Park) they are: JG970, ER259, JG922, JG940 and JG951. This from my copy of MAW3, which I just happen to have handy (the note says 5 Spits from the 31st FG, but they are from both groups). Unfortunately the 12th AF report does not specify the group, or the pilot, just the cause of loss (Combat). So if anyone can match any of these Spitfires to any of this days losses, I would be most interested in the documentation.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Hello,
A double collision, Sweetland with Muenchenberg and Williamson(bailed) with Strasen,Muenchenberg's wingman.
Of interest Lt. Wolfe of the 309th/31FG was also downed (by flak) on this day.

Re: Capt Theodore R Sweetland 2nd FS/52nd FG

Hello Frank,
I did some searching a few years ago and now looked at the papers.
Was there a JG970 ?
AB JA100-JZ999 - JG713 to JG960. Next is JK101.
ER970(?) - 01/28/43 - Lt. Zientowski - 52FG.
Alex
