Bf 109 K-4 W.Nr. 335 072 was testflown April 13th 1945 in Amberg-Schafhof, decentralised production of Mtt Regensburg. Most likely the 335xxx production has its origins from the KZ Flossenbürg - Vilseck - Amberg/Schafhof production line, with little probability from the Waldwerk Bodenwöhr - Waldwerk Cham production line. Other confirmed K-4 production are W.Nr. 335166-335215 (flight logs for acceptance)

A rare example, indeed.

If He111 is 701419, it was with TGr.30 end of 1944
Through which miracle 335 became 335072 ??

My intention was to point out the very late timeframe we´re moving within. The later the timeframe the more we´ll have to depend on hypothetical guesses due to the chaotic situation of these days.

Sorry for having caused confusion

The 335 is on the rudder, is there enough room for three more digits? Seems like 335 might be the last three digits of the w/n.

There´s enough space to contain the complete W.Nr. - so nothing different to other K-4s being stenciled that way.
I´d doubt the presence of a RVB. The fuselage band is applied very carelessly with blurred seams. Maybe it is only an attempt to cover the handpainted last three figures of the W.Nr. appearing almost regularly on Messerschmitts of this series.
Between the right boot shaft and the "RVB" and between the "RVB" border and the Balkenkreuz some dark spots can be seen - maybe remnants of the handpainted W.Nr. The spot between "RVB" and cross may indicate a "2"...

Regards

I believe that the He 111 is H-20 WNr. 701413, purportedly found by US forces at Ansbach (R-45), though Frankfurt-Rhein Main cannot be completely ruled out. It was marked B3+CK and once served with KG 54. I first published color photos of this aircraft in AIRFOIL #1 in 1983.

Hi Steve

Roger's photo over on BattleGroundRelics http://www.battlegroundrelics.com/ shows the fin in 'wellenmuster' but the tail feathers and fuselage in two different colours. The aircraft has a 'kit of parts' appearence. Does your photos indicate show that and if so could you tell us what colours are they likely to be?

Thanks

Chris

Not that I expect logic any more, but no chance it was S3+CK, I suppose? At the end of the war an He 111 in the markings of 2./TG 30 would be less surprising than one in 2./KG 54 markings (since that Staffel had not had Heinkels for — how long, a couple of years or more?

Nick is right. KG 54 changed from He 111 to Ju 88 early june 1940. They did keep a few He 111 for sea resue when they were stationed in France in 1940.

Kind regards,
Rudi.
