Photo Handley Page

Hello,

Currently on ebay there is a nice photo of a Handley Page V/1500 at:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-B-W-...QAAOSwondeqq3Y

Unfortunately I can't quite read the serial.

Thanks to Bertrand for the heads up on the type identification.

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Handley Page

Hello Nick,,

Many thanks for the info. Is it known if the E8290 entered operational service, or whether it was scrapped following post-war reductions?

Regards,

Clint

Not similar....the same
Look at the background in front of the wheels.

Don't know for how long this aircraft survived. It is not listed as in unit service on Jan 1st 1920. A list produced on 31 Dec 1919 showed 54 aircraft in Britain (plus one in India) still on charge. That number must have included those delivered as spares.
Source: Air Britain RAF Aircraft J1-J9999 and WW 1 survivors

The V/1500 was "one bridge too far" for the British Industry during WW 1. It took ages to come to fruition while politicians and militaries debated back and forth.
When the war was over, it was basically useless and nobody wanted it. It could not be turned into a civil transport either, since it was too unreliable and costly. They were probably scrapped as silently as possible, since nobody wanted an outcry of wasted money....

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Handley Page

Hello,

Currently on ebay are two photos of a Handley Page O/100 marked D1 as the seller mentions Ochey, the aircraft may belong to 216 Squadron at:

and

also while searching for further info on the machine I came across the following photo, which may or may not be the same aircraft:

Re: Photo Handley Page

Pity the photos on e-bay are so indifferent Clint

I do agree, it has to be 216 Sq even if the date of March 1918 is a bit early.
The unit didn't arrive into France until 30 March 1918 and that was into Villeseneaux. They didn't move into Ochey until May.

I also believe the final photo is from 216 Sq. If the same aircraft, I don't know since the unit had A-1, B-3 as well, so it seems they were coded with both letters and digits, perhaps forming four flights (A-D) and possibly having three aircraft in each flight, A-1 to A-3 etc. So this one could thus be anything from D-1 to D-3, if my conjectures are correct.

The serial numbers are all well hidden on the rear of the fuselage, being excellently () hidden by the fins....

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Handley Page

Hi Stig,

I hope you had a pleasant holiday.

March does seem a bit early. Also technically speaking, still 16 Sqn RNAS until April.

I think your suggestion about the large letters reflecting the flight of the aircraft and three aircraft per flight certainly sounds as though it makes sense.Hopefully in the course of time further info will arrive about the serials of the aircraft and the tie inwith the 'flight letters'.

Clint

Hello,

Currently on ebay are two photos of Handley Page aircraft as follows:

Handley Page O/400 USAS

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HANDLEY-P...kAAOSwHHxf7jI3

Handley Page V/1500 J1936 Old Carthusian

I'm not sure if the first photo has been previously seen as some of the sellers other H-P photos are defintely familiar.

Clint
