Dornier: The Yugoslav Saga 1926-2007

Dornier: The Yugoslav Saga 1926-2007 was a project that I worked on with Aleksandar Ognjevic for the last 3 years and I am happy to announce that the book is due to be published soon.

Following World War I, when the need arose to renew its aging air force which consisted mostly of obsolete war relics, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and soon thereafter Kingdom of Yugoslavia, recognized qualities of Dornier's airplanes and approached the factory instead of going exclusively to its traditional war time ally, France. Of course, wartime reparation payments played a role in this decision, however, this is not to detract from the fact that at the time airplanes purchased at the time from Dornier had no equivalents. From 1926 when Do D was first introduced, various Dornier airplanes and floatplanes served with distinction and outlasted numerous changes in politics, country names, borders, flags, kings, dictators and presidents. Three of those, Do 17K, Do 22 and Do Wal, took part n the brief 1941 April war opposing the German Reich who itself fielded Do 17 bombers in its ruthless attack against the Yugoslav capital, Belgrade.

After 95 years of distinguished service, the eventual scrapping or sale of Dornier Do 28D-2 to a foreign buyer will bring about the closure to the magnificent and without a precedent Dornier Saga in the western Balkans. Even 50 years after the passing of great Claude Dornier, his brand of airplanes is still leaving a lasting mark in the world as well as Yugoslav and Serbian aviation history.

Re: Dornier: The Yugoslav Saga 1926-2007

Our book Dornier: The Yugoslav Saga 1926-2007 which Aleksandar Ognjevic and I co-authored is finally in my hands. 3 years of team work and research went into this one, we had access to documents and photographs not previously covered which enabled us to tell the most detailed story of Dornier Do D, Wal, Y, 22, 17 and 28 in Yugoslav service from 1926 to 2007. 336 pages, 583 photos, technical drawings in 1/72 and 1/144 scale and 28 color profiles.
