Capture of Ju88 on Cyprus

At 19:00 hrs on the 22 July 1943 four Hurricanes from the 127 Squadron detachment at Nicosia, Cyprus were scrambled and intercepted a Ju88 above Limassol. The aircraft made a landing at Limassol and was captured intact. Eyewitness acounts claim the pilot was very young.
Does anyone have any more information on this incident?

Re: Capture of Ju88 on Cyprus

Could this be the Romanian defector? I don't know of another ME Ju 88 "capture". If so, the story is told in several places, and the aircraft is in the Smithsonian (not that they call it that any more, but in Washington, anyway).

Re: Capture of Ju88 on Cyprus

I do not believe there are any Ju 88s at NASM (which is still part of the Smithsonian), but they do have a Ju 388. The last time I saw it, Ju 88 W.Nr. 430650 was still at The US Air Force museum near Dayton,Ohio where it has been for many, many years.

Best Regards,

Artie bob

Re: Capture of Ju88 on Cyprus

Indeed, the USAF Museum.

War Prizes has a photo of this machine, still in Romanian colours but with a very oddly proportioned RAF roundel. It was given the RAF serial HK959. Another Ju 88 was given the serial HK858 from the ME allocation, but no further details are known. I wonder if this is an error, 858 and 959 being the same machine? In which case the dates suggest that HK959 is the correct serial.

Andy,

Do you have the names of the four 127 Sqn pilots who intercepted the Ju 88?

Best Regards

Re: Capture of Ju88 on Cyprus

Would anyone happen to have any contact with the pilots that intercepted this Romanian Ju 88? It is indeed at the USAF Museum, although the markings are not totally correct.
