It's not helpful when two contemporary sources disagree!

Hi Franck,
Good question! I'll leave that to the airfield specialists on this forum. Here is an enlarged cropping from the photo. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1421 Jim |

436. This is Me 262 A-2a W.Nr. 500200 "black X" of 2./KG 51 at Fasberg in late May 1945 still in Luftwaffe markings. It was one of eight Me 262s of KG 51 that arrived at Flugplatz Prag-Rusin between 11.10 and 11.42 hours on 30 April 1945 where they were assigned to Gefechtsverband Hogeback. It was probably there that all previous markings of KG 51 and smaller balkenkreuz were painted over and new markings were added to denote the only remaining "2./KG 51" in May 1945 mentioned in Luftwaffe reports. These new markings consisted of a single black letter outlined in white forward of a large balkenkreuz consisting of only thick white outer bars, sometimes over a square of dark obliterating paint that can be seen in this photo. In most cases, the black letter was placed so that its top was higher than that of the balkenkreuz. Also, the nosecaps and tail tips were repainted red overall eliminating the white bands denoting I. Gruppe. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1418 437. This is a poor photo of a Me 262 A, possibly "black I", that meets the criteria of an aircraft of 2./KG 51 at Prag-Rusin. I do not know where or when it was taken. The soldiers seem to be GIs. |

438. In this thread: http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=63763 Faenor, in post #11, was kind enough to give the link to lefeckabadatelna.cz. If you scroll down near the bottom to "Me 262 Orech okr. Praha-zapad, 7.5.1945" and click on it, you will learn about the loss of Eberhard Pöhling of 6./KG 51. At the bottom of this story is posted "via JaPo" the accompanying photo of Pöhling's wrecked Me 262. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1420 439. This is a tweaked cropping of the above photo. To my eye, it shows a flattened fuselage, mainly the port rear side. Looking closely, you can see a faded "K" in front of a large style balkenkreuz as well as the "feet" of the "K" on the starboard side. Note the white surround of the "K", the dark black "foot" of the starboard "K" (red arrow) and the dark, faded paint-out under the balkenkreuz. For what it's worth, a Me 262 A-2a "9K+KH" was one of the last aircraft used in April 1945 by KG 51. On 18 April Fw. Karl-Albert Capitain used it operationally and landed safely, Horn, Das Flurschaden-Geschwader, p. 299. However this aircraft was first mentioned by Horn on p.240 as being flown by Ltn. Anton Schimmel of 1./KG 51 and may have been his personal aircraft. Under sheer speculation, Schimmel may have flown it to Prag- Rusin where it became "black K", possibly the W.Nr. 111635 transferred by Schimmel on 30 March (Horn, p.283). |

440. A few weeks ago, Ed West was kind enough to post this photo from eBay on the Captured German planes thread on this forum. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1428 441. This enlarged cropping shows that an identifying numeral, an underlined "17", has been written by hand on the rear fuselage of this Me 262 directly under the rear fairing of the canopy. Also there is a hole in the metal skin directly to the left of, and above the numeral. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1429 442. This photo was posted on eBay a number of years ago. The placing of the underlined "11" suggests that the same location is a possibility. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1430 443. This photo purports to show the backs of the above picture. Was there a Messerschmitt assembly facility for Me 262s near Weiden, Germany? |
