Re: John Voll 31/08/44
According to Study 85 Voll was only credited with 2 on 31 Aug. ( Ju.52s) over Yugoslavia; the Macchi 202 claim on 23 Sept. (his 13th) was descibed by Voll later....
"....I started firing , and although I only used up twenty rounds per gun on the Macchi in front of me, it seemed as though I'd used a hundred before my shots blew the cockpit apart and the pilot bailed out." Nick |

Re: John Voll 31/08/44
YES,I made a MISTAKE concerning the 31.
This claim of a MC.202 is very strange(no losses of Luftwaffe and ANR).....a Croatian MC.205?? According to Denes Bernàd/Làszlo Màrton, the 2 Ju.52 are Romanian (crashes around Poteni/Romania),...."friendly fire" Michel |

Re: John Voll 31/08/44
Hi Michel. If it was a 202 (and not mis-identified by Voll) it could be from the training base at Borongaj where I believe the Macchis were sent from 2./ (Kroat.) Jgr. sometime in September. Belluno is not too far from the Croatian border.

Re: John Voll 31/08/44
Good evening Michel,
think one of the Ju 52 was: Beh.Lp. Banaesa / Junkers Ju 52/3mge / # 5127 / Transport Flight / Shot down by P-51 Mustang - Lieutenant Voll - 31st Fighter Group - 15th USAAF / Crashed near Burghofen, near Sächsisch-Regen, Siebenbürgen (Reghin - Kreis Mureș) - Romania / Unteroffizier Anton Stückrath (Bs) - KIA / Rest of the Crew slightly wounded Cheers Fred |

Re: John Voll 31/08/44
Interesting,it contradicts the Romanian Ju.52 version, especially since J can't find any information confirming the loss of Ju.52 Romanian.

Re: John Voll 31/08/44
Michel
Voll and the others should not be claiming Romanian aircraft at all, given they were allies for a week and three days after Lt Col Gunn was flown to Italy by Cantacuzini. Indeed B-17s were on a mission to pick up POWs during the day. Given you'r interest in accurate claiming, Voll claimed a Fi 156 10 m NW of Sisak at 1030 on 25th August. I have no idea who this might be. The other American fighter claims in the Med area on this day were 12-1-2 FW 190s. Freds list the losses as 13 by SG 151 (or 152?) and 2 by IV JG 3. That is 100 per cent accurate. Regards Russell |

Re: John Voll 31/08/44
Hi Russell
According to Bernàd/Màrton,Voll did not claim them as Romanian...it's their deduction by comparing the Romanian losses ( "friendly fire")...wich I cannot find despite their precise description! Michel |
