Werner Baumbach September 1942

Hi guys

In Werner Baumbach's "Broken Swastika" page 92, he implies (quoting his diary) that following an attack by KG30's Ju88s against Convoy PQ-18, two of his pilots - namely Flechner and Eckardt - were amongst those lost.

I can't find the above. Can anyone advise, please?

Cheers

Brian

Re: Werner Baumbach September 1942

I have only one of these:

Ju 88A-4 WNr.142148 of the 5./KG 30, coded 4D+AN
Staffelkapitän Hptm. Willi Flechner, and crew(B Ofw. Alfred Städler, Bf Fw. Josef Harras & Bs Oblt. Wilhelm Böhmelt) MIA 28.August 1942 on a mission to Archangelsk, Luftkampf with P-40 from 729 IAP (Kostikov)

Good luck in your search,
GRM

Re: Werner Baumbach September 1942

Thanks, GRM

Yes, I have a note of that loss but Baumbach definitely implies that both failed to return from an attack on PQ-18 (he doesn't indicate actual date, but of course we are talking about 13-18 September span. He also implies that he was quoting from his diary!

Something not quite right here!

Cheers
Brian

PS: I had Flechner's loss down to a ramming or AA fire?
