Naval and Army Collision Nov9th 1927

To help with Stig's knowledge of Pre -War US Navy Aviation I offer him up the following news report (my additions in brackets)

Pilot Dies as Two Planes Collide in Air

THREE FLIERS LAND SAFELY IN PARACHUTES
Naval pilot killed as ship falls into ocean alter crash
with bomber

NOSE FIRST INTO WATER
Army craft, deserted by crew
strikes roof of house, knocking
off chimney
Norfolk, Va., Nov. 9—One navy
aviator was killed and three army
fliers escaped injury in parachute
leaps when two planes collided at
3,000 feet altitude here today.
Lieut. Addis D Nelson (Lt Addis Dewey Nelson sometime incorrectly quoted as Addison Nelson), with a wife
in Pensacola, Fla. (married 8 May 1926), and mother in
Brookline. Mass., (Dob 24 December 1897) lost his life. His
tiny Hawk racer (F6C-3 A-7132), struck a large
army bomber (LB-5 27-340 20 Bomber Squadron) with three men aboard.
Nelson was killed and his machine
splintered. The army bomber was
thrown out of control and crashed.
Lieut D. H. Stuart (Donald Hurt Stuart -later Lt-Col #O-166725) , pilot, and his
assistants, Radio Mechanic F. P.
Miller (Fred Pasham Miller - 2nd Jump - 1st Jump: May 28, 1927 Keystone XLB-5 26-208) and Mechanical Sergeant A B.
Jewell (Arvin Barnard Jewell), took to the parachutes. All
landed safely, although two had to
be fished from the river.
The bomber crashed into a roof
and knocked over a chimney and
toppled over into the water

Nelson is buried at Arlington.
