operation rutter RAF markings (cancelled dieppe raid )

Hi All,
I have seen many photos and decal sheets for the cancelled operation rutter raid, mainly on spitfires , ( i.e. the four white nose bands and the two white tail plane bands ).
Down to the question ........
Has anyone seen any photos of the other a/c with them on , i.e. the hurricanes / mustangs / typhoons etc
Or even on any of the bostons / blenheims how were they painted ?
Cheers
Jerry

Hi Jerry
I have seen a photo of a 253 Sqn Hurricane with the markings. I understand from someone who did a lot of research on this topic that the markings were not specifically for Rutter but a form of identity marking trialled by 11 Group. So Typhoons would not have had them as they were 12 Group at that time.

Hi Chris,
Many thanks for the reply and info, it is interesting that the markings may not actually have been for Rutter.
cheers

Re: operation rutter RAF markings (cancelled dieppe raid )

Hello Chris & Brewerjerry.

The markings were made for Rutter. (Maybe only for Spitfire ?)

I have read some private diaries of Free French Pilots where it was written the markings are made for this operation without saying the codename of the operation (19, 130, 131, 340 Sqns).

I had also a conversation with "Jaco" Andrieux (he was at 130 sqn. at this time) about these markings. He remembered well about these markings made 1 or 2 months (for him) before the Dieppe Show. his diary said: ( 28 june 42) to 11 grp (southend) for some days, big operation... (4th july) the "Spit" have their noses painted as zebras. these white stripes are ridiculous....

In the diaries of René Mouchotte (340Sqn.) it is written at the 4th July 1942: "... We have stopped training flights.... We received a note today to paint all around the nose of our planes large white stripes... Hum! the huns will not miss us now!...

For myself, I have seen these markings only on Spitfire.

cheers

Hi Chris,
Curiosity is getting me, do you recall if the 253 sqn hurricane in the photo, was in day camo, or the night intruder camo.
( Presumably it would not have been one of their all black aircraft )
Cheers
