Lt. L.G. Bùtelin from the 12 Fighter Regiment (USSR)

On 23 July 1941 a formation Ju 88 of KG 54 was intercepted by Sowjet fighters near Uman. On of the fighters collides with a Ju 88. According to a German source, the pilot should have been Lt. L.G. Bùtelin from the 12 Fighter Regiment.

Is the any info available on this pilot or unit?

Peter

Hello Peter,

According to Soviet research, Butelin was probably killed while ramming a Ju 88 from KG 51 over Stanislav.

According to the Soviet-time "Taran-encyclopedia" in three volumes published by A.D. Zajtsev 1984-1985 in Monino Jn.Lt. Leonid Georgiyevich Butelin (12 IAP) perfomed his suicide-taran early morning 22 June 1941 near his AF base av Stanislav in Western Ukraine (= only recently occupied ex-Polish territory).

On 23 July 1941 two tarans were performed at unspecified locations on the "Southern front" regions and two tarans south-west of Leningrad.
