RAF Aircrew stranded in Montevideo 1943/44
Hi all,
Doing some research into the career of a pilot of No.218 (Gold Coast) Squadron. In his diary he records that he and other RAF aircrew were stranded in Montevideo for almost 7 months and that it was the hospitality of ex-pats that kept them well feed and healthy. Can anyone explain what the circumstances surrounding this long stay are ? TIA Steve

Steve,
Perhaps not related to your pilot, but here's a(nother) story of Commonwealth servicemen having to make a detour from South Africa to Britain via Uruguay: see http://www.vintagewings.ca/VintageNe...o-the-War.aspx Scroll down to second half of story. Regards, Leendert |
