Place name to identify

Hi all,
Atached is a scan of the back of a photo of some Luftwaffe crew members end of 1944.

I can read the following:
?????
Von rechts: Jehle, Zehetner, Flossmann,
(x) Brüning und Sprenger
(alle uber London weggeblieben)
but the first word is a mystery to me. It looks like it's something like "Esalonitan".
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Place name to identify

It may be Salonitan, a city near Solin, Croatia. I must say that the way the capital letters are written is very unusual to me. But my background is in written Slavic words.

Best,
Ed

Ff Oblt Karl Egon Hellwig + - the following baled out over England and taken prisoner Bo Uffz Johann Jehle , Bf Uffz Walter Flossmann Bs Fw Roland Kunert on 22-1-1944 6/KG54

Ff Uffz Heinz Goergen + - the following baled out over England and taken prisoner Bo Uffz Joachim Spenger , Bf Uffz Alois Zehetner , Bs Uffz Wolfgang Bruning 29-1-1944 3/KG54

According to the AD(I)K reports the three crewmen from 6/KG54 had previously been with 3/KG54 a common base for several of them had been with IV/KG54 at Grottaglie other bases mentioned prior to moving to Germany for Steinbock were Novarra/Cameri and Piacenza

Must be some misspelling - there is no city in Croatia named Salonitan. There is Solin (Latin and Italian: Salona) alright, a town in Croatia near the city of Split.

Re: Place name to identify

I don't think this place is somewhere in eastern Europe. I think it's more likely to be in southern or western Europe.

Croatia is in fact located in southern-east Europe, west of Greece, and north of Italy.

Besides, in the sentence "...with the remains of the oldest Salonitan cemetery basilica...", the word "Salonitan" is adjective. The name of town is Solin (Salona).

Never mind.
