Re: P-38 L-1 42-4384
HGabor,
one question about emergency landings Pecs and Sombor airfields. In some russian books, several recovered US bombers were listed as being flown from Sombor airfield. However, most of listed landed on Pecs airfield, according to MACRs. From some six bombers, only one actually landed in Sombor (B-17 44-6422). This is very certain from US documents, but I did found one statement where pilot claims that he saw several B-24s and B-17s on Sombor airfield. Only possible explanation to me is that Soviets transferred them from Pecs to Sombor, before being sent further to east. Do you have some info on it? |

Re: P-38 L-1 42-4384
Well, this is a very tough question. We can list planes which landed at certain airfields (with eg. photo evidences), but in case of American planes it is hard to say if it was their "first" landing with their original crew, or with soviets.
The distance is not so big between Sombor and Pecs, so with full tanks bombers could fly back to Ukraine easily. I do not know, probably more research is needed. Anyway, here is my -probably incomplete- list of landings and crashes at, or near the Zombor and Pécs airfields. Hope this helps a bit. Gabor Last edited by HGabor; 16th May 2018 at 13:32. |

Re: P-38 L-1 42-4384
HGabor,
thx for info. According to MACR, 42-51610 landed in Pecs, not in Sombor. For 42-51990 I have no info it landed in Sombor, do you have some source for it? RAF Halifax - I think crashed in vicinity of Sombor, and crew was captured. |

Re: P-38 L-1 42-4384
Will look into it. I think I have seen 42-51990 '58' in the background of another plane at Sombor, and if I named the photo something else, - good luck to find it soon among the thousand pics ;-)))))

Re: P-38 L-1 42-4384
A well know (but a poor quality copy) pic. of the Pécs airfield on April 25, 1945. 465 BG B-24L (S/N: 44-49905, red 'D') is just approaching the runway, while on the ground, in the lower-right corner the wreck of 449 BG B-24J (S/N: 42-51525, '59') can be seen. This B-24 ran into a trench at the edge of the airfield and crashed. Navigator Thomas MacDonald died when the upper turret fell on him at landing. He was buried at Pécs in the new soviet military cemetery by local Lutheran priest, Dr. Zoltán Káldy.

I have Carrington's Escape statement, but it was very useful to find that Mr Gunby was active in this topic. He did some of the research which might be very useful to me, I will try to contact him. |

Re: P-38 L-1 42-4384
Thanks, it's my pleasure. Here are some pics of the soviet 17th Air Army (3rd Ukrainian Front), 244 BAD, 260 BAP A-20G Bostons, lost at the Sombor airfield. Squadrons of 260 BAP used the very same tactical numbers, but in squadron specific colors. (Full stories, pics and details in my A-20 Boston book.) Enjoy!
A-20G-40-DO, lost on March 6, 1945, S/N: 43-21370, #4, pilot: л-т Коломейчук Василий Гаврилович (OK) - take off accident. A-20G-20-DO, lost on March 9, 1945, S/N: 42-86687, #5, pilot: л-т Рой Михаил Прохорович (OK) - bomb explosion after take off accident at Sombor-SW, 2 km. A-20G-25-DO, lost on March 14, 1945, S/N: 43-9274, #4, pilot: л-т Павлов Николай Павлович (WIA) - crashlanding after engine failure and early return from Baja, Hungary at Sombor, 3 km.
