Köthen Signals Research Station: Ju 188 and 388
I've been going through some of the microfilms on the Canadian Department of National Defence site that were mentioned here recently. On reel T-2420 I've found references to a couple of Ju 188 used for monitoring Allied radar:
W.Nr. 260347, Stammkennzeichen given as both GJ+SU and GJ+SR — which is correct? This one was shot down while landing at Soesterberg early on 17 June 1944 and an online source suggests it belonged to NJG 1 but does anyone have better information? Another message (27 June 1944) to II./Ln. Versuchsregiment, Köthen speaks of Ju 188 GF+SZ. Anything known about this one? Finally, from 6 July 1944, there's a memo about building monitoring sets into a Ju 388, "W.Nr. 30006" (only those five digits given) PG+YF. |

Re: Köthen Signals Research Station: Ju 188 and 388
I have Ju 188 E-1 WNr.260347 as GJ+SU. It was photographed as A3+MD in München-Riem in May 1945.
I have a Bf 110 E-1 WNr.4086 as GF+SZ. Ju 388 L-0 WNr.300006 as PG+YF. At Erpr. Stelle Rechlin at the time I think. Regards, Norbert |

Thanks, that's one of the two memos reproduced in the Canadian microfilms.

Re: Köthen Signals Research Station: Ju 188 and 388
The photo that I know of A3+MD shows it amongst trees (unlike every other Riem photo I can remember) with a woman stooping down beside it; maybe an original print shows more but I can't make out any Werk Nummer, unfortunately. Since the 260347 I'm referring to was shot down with five crew killed and burned out on impact, they can't be the same machine.
