Losses of I/JG3 at Paderborn

Hi everyone,
I'm just reasearching into the losses of I/Jg3 at Paderborn in 1945. I have a section of G-6 that supposedly was found near Paderborn, was shot down in 1945 and is from a G-6. The items also says that it was shot down by a P-51. Very vague information, I know but it is all I have and I just thought it would be fun to see what gets turned up. I assume that the G-6 at Paderborn must be from I/JG3 is this correct?
Mfg
Matt

Matt:

I think you may have to be a little more exact as to date and place. There are at least 130+ know losses for JG 3 in 1945. Also, Paderborn is surrounded by lots of small towns and villages that might be listed on the loss report, but not immediately identifiable as near there unless one is familiar with the area.

Re: Losses of I/JG3 at Paderborn

John,
Thankyou very much for your help. As I said this is all the info I have and I realise it is too vague to be of any use. What I was hoping was a loss list for I/Jg3 as they are listed as being based at Paderborn in late 44 to early 45. The information came written on one of the fragments and I wish they had put down a more exact date than 1945! Is it possible to narrow down due to the fact the aircraft is a G-6 and not a G-10, K-4 etc. and was shot down by a P-51 after an alarm start. I realise I have provided as little information as you can get practically but this is all I have

Thanks John

Matt

Matt:

I have no G-6 machines listed as lost by JG 3 in 1945. Records are, of course, incomplete.

Re: Losses of I/JG3 at Paderborn

John,
It must not have been Jg3 then. I only chose JG3 as they were all I could find who were stationed at Paderborn in '45. is there any chance you could have a guess at which jagdgeschwader this G-6 might have come from, using the info it is a G-6 and was destroyed after an alarm start by a P-51 having taken off from Paderborn. an educated guess would tide me over
Thanks for all your help
Matt

Re: Losses of I/JG3 at Paderborn

Matt:

You are casting quite a wide net to research, quickly.

In 1945, most G-6 machines were in training units or some NAG units. The "front line" units were using G-14, G-10 and K-4 machines. However, since front lines were close, there are losses from training and NAG units. They are often listed as lost in air battle or MIA, so there's no way to trace the details even if it might be your machine.

Re: Losses of I/JG3 at Paderborn

Thankyou for your Help John and Robert.
I realised at the start this was a very wild goose chase and was hoping I just might be able to narrow it down to a jagdgeschwader but the points you make are very clear and I thankyou for your patient help. It makes me realise the importance of documenting information for the future because even if you know where something came from at the time, 60 years in the future someone else might not! So give them a head start! lol
Cheers
Matt

Re: Losses of I/JG3 at Paderborn

Hi Matt,

Parts of JG 27 were stationed on the Paderborn and Bad Lippspringe airfield in 45 too.

I found some 109ers:

02.12.44 - IV.(Sturm)/JG 3Unteroffizier Ludwig Knorr - Fw 190 I think - dog fight KIA
08.12.44 - I./JG 3 Fähnrich Wolfgang Fleischer - dogfight KIA
25.12.44 - I./JG 3 Leutnant Brandt -accident
14.01.45 - III./JG 3 Leutnant Waldemar Nikolaus - dog fight KIA
24.03.45 - JG 27 - unknown bailed out - 109 K-4 - dog fight
28.03.45 - II./JG 27 - Leutnant Stefan Kanzler, 109 G-10- dog fight WIA
29.03.45 - I./JG 300 - Feldwebel Wolfgang Hundsdörfer, 109 G-10 - dog fight KIA

airminded regards Fitti
