Re: Luftwaffe P-51 tail

Hello,
From what I see in the LEMB thread on captured P51's the fuller photo of this aircraft does not show a "T" as far as I can see, then again my sight has been wrong before.

Re: Luftwaffe P-51 tail

Hello,
If you look closely at the photo in post 4, you should see that both wings are still attached, the cross on the right can be seen and most of the left wing can also be seen still attached to the fuselage. So my opinion is that unless it is the tip of one of the wings then yes it is from a second aircraft.

This leads me to ask if other photos exist that show the other aircraft ?

On further look, the rudder in photo shown in post 1 is damaged, while that in post 4 looks intact ( or completely removed ) ?

Alex

Re: Luftwaffe P-51 tail

The P51 in Post 1 are the same aircraft as the in Post 14 but as I have suspected before the picture in Post 4 appears to be different. However, it could have been removed from it's crash in the trees to a location with other aircraft wrecks

Re: Luftwaffe P-51 tail

Tom Willis is right. The first picture the plane has damage in the upper part of the rudder and the others don't. Unless it received a further damage combine with a crash place removed.
Eduardo.

Re: Luftwaffe P-51 tail

I think the picture in post 4 is the same A/C as the rest of the photographs. If you look at the tail in picture 4 you can see a light colored area in the rudder which corresponds to the damage shown in the first picture. It does look like the airplane was moved or else the trees are where the picture was taken, thus looking out on a open field.

Re: Luftwaffe P-51 tail

Hello Eduardo,
Any chance we could all view the e-bay picture that you suggest shows the "T" ?
The one from the LEMB that I gave the link to in post and is given again in post does not seem to show a "T".
From the info on Zircus Rosarious it seems to suggest they only had 3 or 4 P51's.
These are from what I have from various books and on line.
"Jerry" - 43-24825 - 4FG/335FS became it is reported "8+7" in Luftwaffe service.
43-12147 - 359FG/370FS was reportedly used as spare parts for 44-15174 as was 44-13412 " Reggie's Reply".
44-14271 4FG/334FS was a possible.
44-63162 355FG/358FS was repaired by Rocks Wulf and used by the Luftwaffe.
44-11363 " Therese" 339FG/505FS repaired and used by Luftwaffe.
44-63745 - " Lil Honey" 55FG/343FS failed to take off.Pilot Howes, pow. Rescue attempt failed. Pilot Liles pow in 4414175 "Sweet Marie II" had crash landed. So one if not both possibly used by Luftwaffe.
44-63166 " Ridge runner III" pilot McKinnon rescued by Green in 44-14137.
44-11627 " Green Eyes" 78 FG/83 FS pilot O'Brian shot escapeing, rescue attempt by Olson failed, so very possibly used by Luftwaffe.
But there are photo's of T9+CK, in natural metal with yellow tail and undersurface. This was "My Lady Margaret" - 42-103458 - ex 325th FG.(a/c has a fin strake ).
This a/c is shown in " Luftwaffe in Focus" special no.5.
There are photo's of a second T9+CK in green/yellow colours but this a/c has no fin strake.
So a different T9+CK.
There are photo's of T9+HK in "Foreign Planes in the service of the Luftwaffe" by J-L. Roba. This is said to be the a/c of Cpt. Thomas E. Joyce - 4th FG (a/c has no fin strake ). This a/c is also shown in natural metal with yellow underside but retained the red nose band. This cannot be as the a/c of Joyce was 44-14271.
There are also photo's of "T9+PK and T9+PR both natural metal and wrecked.
Then the P51D's
The camouflaged photo as shown in this thread and in the LEMB.
A natural metal/yellow as shown in "Strangers in a Strange Land" vol1 this a/c has no fin strake.
All for now
Alex

Re: Luftwaffe P-51 tail

Hello,Alex;
I don't have the original e-bay picture.if you increase the given picture here you can hardly see a "T" after the cross that may existed before. In case this letter was true it does nothing to do with a "T9" unit code.
