Do 17 Z Crash in Switzerland 14 Nov 40
On the above date, Do 17 Z, 2663, U5+DL of 3/KG 2 was damaged by German Flak over Boulogne. Lt Klaus-Jürgen Schmitz (F-+ 15 Jun 42)and Fw Franz Pietsch (BM +10 Jul 41) and the rest of the crew baled out, the aircraft crashing at Willerzell in Switzerland. Can anyone add any more about the actual crash? It flew on almost 900 km!

Re: Do 17 Z Crash in Switzerland 14 Nov 40
Chris,
I have it listed the previous night (13 November 1940) thus: 3./KG2 Dornier Do17Z-3 (2663). Damaged by own flak on return from night sortie over London and abandoned east of Boulogne. Abandoned aircraft flew on for some four hundred miles before crashing at Geissweidli on the Fuchsberg, south-east of Willerzell in Switzerland, 10.48 p.m. FF Lt Klaus-Jürgen Schmitz and BM Fw Franz Pietsch both baled out landing slightly injured, rest of crew baled out unhurt. Aircraft U5+DL 95% damaged - write-off. This crash resulted in a widespread manhunt by the Swiss authorities in a fruitless search for the missing crew. |

Re: Do 17 Z Crash in Switzerland 14 Nov 40
From Karl Ries' »Deutsche Luftwaffe über der Schweiz, 1939-45« (Verlag Dieter Hoffmann, Mainz, 1978) ISBN 3-87341-022-2
13 November 1940, 22.48 hours, crash near Willerzell am Sihl-See Do 17 Z-3, W.Nr. 2663, U5+DL, 3./KG 2. Entered Swiss air space from the north at 22.37, with its nav. lights on. Seen at 2000 m over Deldbach, Lake Zürich, heading toward Etzel. North of Einsiedeln it turned north, flew over the Sihl-See and losing height, crashed at a shallow angle on the Hirzegg [a hill]. A/c broke up completely, having brought down 120 fir trees. Investigators found the fuel tanks empty and the port prop feathered, suggesting engine failure. No battle damage. No crew. Maps of Southern England. Wreckage returned to German, 22 Nov. |

Nick,
Does the Ries book (or any other source) provide any photos of the wreckage? |

Hello,
Can anyone supply copies of photos of this a/c? (Not sure if Chris is referring to the Ries book, or some other source). Larry |
