Aircraft type from a Werk-Nr. / Ju-188?

Bonjour,

A picture of the wreckage of a Ju-188 (Ju-88?) taken at Vannes airfield, France in 1946, where young people are standing on the rear of the fuselage (tail section), shows a serial number, Werk-Nr. 0906. The camouflage is made up of multiple curved (white?) lines of different lengths and thicknesses. Can the exact type of aircraft be determined from this serial? Perhaps its unit?

Best regards,
Frederic

Re: Aircraft type from a Werk-Nr. / Ju-188?

Hello Frederic!

Two hits on www.stammkennzeichen.de

Ju 88 D-1, TX+OT, Werk-Nr. 430906, 2.(F)/123 in August 1943
Ju 88 A-17, PN+PS, Werk-Nr. 550906, no further information.

The appearance of a A-17 near the coast makes sense.

Herzliche Grüsse aus Oberschwaben,

Wolfgang

Re: Aircraft type from a Werk-Nr. / Ju-188?

Bonjour/Hallo Wolfgang,

Thanks for the link and these first elements. The Vannes airfield has seen units such as K.G. 77, Z.G. 1 and K.G.2 at various times. Several wrecks of Ju-88s are mentioned in a British service survey dated September 1944 - without Werk-Nr. unfortunately.

Best regards,
Frederic

Re: Aircraft type from a Werk-Nr. / Ju-188?

Bonjour,

After more research in the town archives (Vannes), a recent discovery - another view of the rear fuselage section (Werk-Nr. 0906), shows a "+ ER" marking, indicating an aircraft belonging to the 7. Staffel. I do not know whether this information helps to broad the scope of the research.

For your information: the British service survey lists the following Werk-Nr.:
Ju 88, Werk-Nr. 96254
Ju 188, Werk-Nr. 180425 5U+CL
Ju 188, Werk-Nr. 260221 (this plane? May 14-15, 1944: Bei der II./K.G. 2 geht eine Ju 188 bei der Landung in Vannes zu Bruch. / A Ju 188 of the II./K.G. 2 crashes when landing at Vannes. [Quelle/Source: Der Luftkrieg in Europa / Ulf Balke]

Best regards,
Frederic
