He111 lost 21/22 April 1942

On this date PO RJ Foster of 604 Squadron claimed an He111 over England. Can anyone identify a possible victim of his attack?

Apologies. I meant to write 21/22 June 1942

K

His claim was for a He 111 half a mile south of Ventnor at 0100hrs. No other claims that night in this area but 5./KG 2 lost a Do 217 attacking Southampton, take off Eindhoven 2318hrs; cause not known crew all missing

....and which WNr had this aircraft?
Your Do 217 book is very short on that subject - unfortunately.....

Codes and crew's names could also help Keith.

Keith, have you tried the BAMA LW loss lists? Maybe there were some He 111 with a certain degree (%) of damages....

Matching is a tricky job, but sometimes it pays off...and you find what you were looking for...Of course, if other persons can help, it is better and everyone do learn.

Keep going...you gonna find all his matches...be patient.

A.

Hello Stig,

in Ulf Balke’s KG 2 chronicle is listed
5./KG 2 Do 217 E-2 WNr. 1188 U5-NN 100% T/O 23.18 Eindhoven
target Southampton, loss place unknown
F Ofw Johann Rulfs
B Ofw Willi Seelow
Bf Fw Theodor Schulz
Bm Fw Walter Richter.

The GQM loss return says
II./KG 2 Do 217 E-4 WNr. 1188 U5+NN loss place unknown
F Ofw Willi Seelow
B Fw Theodor Schulz
Bf Fw Walter Richter
Bm Ofw Johann Rulfs.

Regards
Leo

Re: He111 lost 21/22 April 1942

Thanks Leo

I never bought the two books by Balke.
Reason was, due to the title, I dismissed them as a general 1939-45 air war history in Europe.
At that time I thought I had enough general books about that.
Only found out years later they were specifically about KG 2.....
Dreadful title....dreadful mistake by me....

Cheers
Stig

PS: Looks like someone made a mistake in the loss details. If you move each man one step down
in Balke's list you will get the same details as the GQM list. Type set error by Balke?

Re: He111 lost 21/22 April 1942

Stig if I had included all losses of 217s, it would have run into 3 volumes. This is why my book on the Do 17 10 July to 31 October 1940 was written-just 3 months of losses. As to He 111s, a number of IV Gruppe were active but I could see nothing and in any case Foster reported his kill burning on the water
