LtCdr Richard Bigg-Wither 1841 Squadron
Following up an old topic. Just listened to an IWM interview with BW during which he describes destroying a Kate at low level near Maizuru. This date of the kill seems to be 17.07.45 rather than the later dates of 29 or 30 July 1945.

Re: LtCdr Richard Bigg-Wither 1841 Squadron
I have this as on July 30, 1945 at 0630 hours, Wakasa Wan area.
References: ADM 199/1478 (Formidable Log), which does not name the pilot; A Formidable Commission, pg 112 (as Kate). I have another claim for a Dinah at 1823, Maizuru. Reference: unrecorded ADM 199 ref (Victorious Log), also without any names. Both of these are also found in ADM 199/1478, as the reports on the Operations of 28th and 30th July 1945. ADM 199/1478 is a large bound volume. I seem to remember the Logs as being small paper documents, similar to the blue test booklets from college (in the US). Enjoy! Frank.

Hi Frank
Did you ever find any similar documentation for HMS Avenger Hurricane actions September 1942? Cheers Brian |

Re: LtCdr Richard Bigg-Wither 1841 Squadron
Hi Frank, Brian
I have listened to the interview again and he does state it was on the day his squadron first flew in that area, and stating that was 17.7.1945. He also confirms it was a "Kate" and that it exploded under his guns. I assume he is getting the information from his logbook because he is pretty specific about events. |
