Re: Last prisoner
I find it hard to believe a 12 year old Hitler Jugend "prison camp guard" executing a high value prisoner like Yakov Dzhugashvili in 1943. Highly improbable.

Re: Last prisoner
Have to agree with Waldo, there's no way this happened. I would guess that they either don't know who was responsible or the person responsible was killed and Stalin wouldn't accept it. And interesting that the Russian's believe this is an act of generosity and good will!

Re: Last prisoner
Incredible story if it can really be confirmed. Maybe this man was just "forgotten" and his data lost in archives while all the other German prisoners were released.
Besides German PoWs there were considerable number of Italian and Japanese PoWs. I have read that Italians had it most hard (probably Russian winter) and their death rate was about 50 %, higher than that of any other group of PoW´s in Soviet captivity. Also many Italians and Japanese were held as prisoners until the mid and late 1950´s. While the above is shocking and against all international conventions regarding PoWs, it should be remembered that Soviets had it perhaps even harder in German captivity and the death rate of Soviet PoW´s was probably as high as 60 %. Those who survived had it not easy in Soviet Union - many were considered as traitors (for surrendering to enemy) and they were sent to labour camps, in which they spent many years. |

Re: Last prisoner
Situation in Soviet prisons/camps are Spartan and guess that was their way to organize things (same terms are also for their own prisoners). Long time ago when I was younger I read interesting story of great karate master Gogen Yamaguchi. In the prison where he was held with other Japanese prisoners (Gogen served as soldier during WW2) was rumors that he was able to broke wall with punch of his hands. Soviet guards could not believe that and once they ask him to demonstrate his skill. Gogen hit one building wall (make of high temperature resistant brick) and make hole of half meter diameter. That was great surprise for Soviets. They was later released and story spread among the fan of this great master.
